Scare Tolerance: how easily you scare, measured by Gasper

Scare Tolerancenoun

Scare Tolerance is Gasper's read on how easily you scare, found by comparing your scare scores with the community's on the same films.

Scare Tolerance is Gasper's answer to the question every horror fan gets asked: how easily do you scare? Instead of asking you to guess, it compares the scare scores you gave with the Community Scare on the same films and names where you land.

How it is measured

Every film you rank has your score and the community's average. Scare Tolerance averages the gap across all of them. Within a point of the crowd is Steady Nerve: you scare about as easily as most of the community. One to four points higher than the crowd is Easily Spooked, and further than that is Terror-Prone. One to four points lower is Hard to Rattle, and further than that is Unshakeable.

It is all time, not yearly, and it is built only from films where both your score and a Community Scare exist. Rank more films and it sharpens.

Why it matters

Scare Tolerance makes your other numbers readable. A 7.4 from someone who is Easily Spooked and a 7.4 from someone who is Unshakeable are not the same 7.4, and knowing which you are lets you read your own list, and your friends' lists, more honestly.

It can also reassure. Plenty of people avoid horror because they think they are "too easily scared". On Gasper that is just a tolerance, and there are whole shelves of films, from comedy horror to the slow burns, that suit it.

In Gasper

Scare Tolerance is the first card on your Profile's Taste tab, under the line "How easily films scare you", alongside the rest of your fear stats: hours watched, your Hottest Take, your Deepest Cut, your top subgenre, your top watch partner and your fear twin. It opens your Bloodwork too. It needs a few ranked films before it shows a reading, and like everything in Gasper it is free.

Questions people ask

What does Steady Nerve mean?

It is the label for landing within a point of the crowd. Your scare scores and the Community Scare on the same films mostly agree.

Does a low tolerance mean I am bad at horror?

It means horror works on you, which is the point of horror. Gasper uses it to describe you, not to grade you.

Is Scare Tolerance free?

Yes. Everything in Gasper is free, your Taste tab included.
