Community Scare: the crowd's scare score for a film

Community Scarenoun

Community Scare is the average scare score of every Gasper member who ranked a film, shown on its page beside your own score.

The Community Scare is the crowd's number. On every film page, Gasper shows the average scare score of everyone who ranked that film, the percentage who loved it, and your own score right beside them under "You".

How it is made

Every member's scare score for a film comes from their own head-to-heads, so each one is a judgment about where the film sits in that person's rankings. The Community Scare is the plain average of those scores, counting members who have ranked at least five films. Your ranking feeds it only as an anonymous aggregate: nobody, including your friends, can pull your number back out of it.

Because every input is relative to someone's list rather than a typed opinion, the average behaves differently from a star rating. It is a measure of how high the film tends to land among the horror people have actually watched, not how many people clicked five stars.

Why it matters

The gap between your score and the Community Scare is the most interesting number on the page. Agree with the crowd on most films and you have Steady Nerve. Run consistently above it and you scare more easily; below it and you are harder to rattle. That pattern across all your films is your Scare Tolerance. The single widest gap is your Hottest Take.

The percentage who loved it is a separate figure, drawn from the Loved heart rather than from scores, which is why a comedy that scared nobody can still show a high loved percentage.

In Gasper

The Community Scare also orders the Films side of the leaderboard, "the scariest films on Gasper", where a film needs two rankings to chart. Gasper does not publish those lists outside the app and this site does not claim to know which films top them. On a film with very few rankings the average is thin and will move as more people rank it. A film nobody has ranked says "Be the first to rank it". The number only exists for released films: unreleased ones can go on your watchlist but cannot be ranked until they are out.

Questions people ask

Does my ranking change the Community Scare?

Yes, as one anonymous entry in the average, once you have ranked five films. Nobody can see which number was yours.

Can I see who ranked a film and what they gave it?

You see friends' rankings in your feed and on their profiles if they are visible to you. The Community Scare itself is only an average.

Is the Community Scare the same as the Films leaderboard?

The Films board orders films by Community Scare, so they are related. The leaderboard is the list; the Community Scare is the number on each film.
