Hottest Take: the film where you and the crowd disagree most

Hottest Takenoun

Your Hottest Take is the film on Gasper where your scare score differs most from the Community Scare, in either direction.

Your Hottest Take is the film where you and everyone else disagree most. Gasper compares your scare score with the Community Scare on every film you have ranked and picks the one with the widest gap, in either direction.

How it is found

Each film in your rankings has two numbers side by side: yours and the average of everyone who ranked it. Subtract one from the other, take the size of the difference, and the largest one wins. If you gave a film a 9 that the community has at a 4, that is a hot take. If you gave a 2 to something the community has at 8, so is that.

It is an all-time stat and it moves. Rank a new film that misses the crowd by more, and it takes over. Watch a thin community average fill in as more people rank, and an old Hottest Take can cool off.

Why it matters

Agreement is dull. The films that reveal something about a horror fan are the ones they feel differently about from everyone else. Someone whose Hottest Take is The Blair Witch Project (1999), scored far above the crowd, is probably someone for whom suggestion and the unseen do the work. Someone who scored it far below is probably someone who needs to see the thing. Neither is wrong; both are useful to know before you pick a film for a group.

It is also the honest version of a "contrarian opinion". You did not type the take; it fell out of a hundred small comparisons you made without thinking about the crowd at all.

In Gasper

Hottest Take lives among your fear stats on the Taste tab of your profile, next to your Scare Tolerance and your Deepest Cut, and it has its own slide in your Bloodwork, which shows your score beside the crowd's. The two numbers it is built from are visible to everyone on every film page. A Hottest Take can only come from a film other people have ranked, because a film you alone have ranked has no gap to measure.

Questions people ask

Is a Hottest Take good or bad?

Neither. It is the film where your experience diverged most from the average, which is usually the most interesting film on your list to talk about.

Can my Hottest Take be a film I found less scary than everyone else?

Yes. The gap counts in both directions. Being unmoved by a film the crowd fears is as much a hot take as the reverse.

Does it change?

Yes. As you rank more films and as more members rank the same ones, the widest gap can move to a different film.
