Do I pick the score myself?

No. On Gasper you answer which of two films was scarier over a few head-to-heads, and the scare score is read from where the film lands in your ranked list

No, and that is the point. Typed scores drift, and favorites get top marks because they are favorites. On Gasper you answer which of two films scared you more, over a few quick head-to-heads against films you have already ranked, and the app does the math.

The details

There is one score, and you do not pick it. The scare score comes from "Which was scarier?" Before the comparisons, you answer "How scary was it?" with Terrifying, Some scares or Barely flinched, which gives the film its range: 7.0 to 10, 4.0 to 6.9, or 1.0 to 3.9. Then the head-to-heads run against films you gave the same answer, each one narrowing the possible landing spot, and after a handful the film sits somewhere definite in your ordered list.

The score, out of 10 with one decimal, is read off that position. You cannot type an 8.5 because there is nothing to type into; the number is a description of where the film sits among everything you have ranked. If you loved the film regardless of how scary it was, that is what the heart is for, and it changes no score.

While your list is short, the number is blurred. Gasper scores a film by comparing it to the others you have ranked, so it needs 5 before it shows numbers at all, and the result screen says how many more to rank to unlock your scare scores. By twenty or thirty films they settle, and from then on scores move only when you rank something that genuinely reshuffles your sense of scary.

Why

Stars drift. Your scale in January is not your scale in October, and a classic collects fives out of respect. "Which of these two was scarier" has no reputation in it, only memory, and people are far better at answering it honestly. The blog post on why "which was scarier" beats a typed rating makes the longer case.

The scare score explains the number and the Loved it heart explains the heart. If a film landed in the wrong place, re-rank it. The guide to how the scare score works goes into the arithmetic.
